My Cousin Rachel is a sinister love triangle between the bachelor Ambrose, his adopted 'son' Philip and the beguiling jet-setting Rachel. For God's sake come to me quickly. The Gate's production of Daphne du Maurier's My Cousin Rachel delivers on the promises of its poster. The Gothic suspense is filled with sexual tension and ambiguity. She has done for me at last, Rachel my torment. It's told by Phillip Ashley, an orphan brought up by his older cousin Ambrose Ashley, as his heir. ReadDreamRelax Review #2 Book Review of My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier. The centre of the story concerns Rachel's motives. Although you could probably make an argument that My Cousin Rachel is packed with characters who tend to have narcissistic (good God, what a word to spell) qualities, I am not going to go down that alley with this critique. In the case of My Cousin Rachel, set during the 1800s, the main character, Phillip is the narrator. When Philip Ashley's much-loved (and rich) cousin Ambrose dies, he is convinced that Ambrose was murdered by his new wife Rachel to inherit his wealth. My Cousin Rachel is my third Daphne du Maurier, and the first I've read told from a masculine perspective.
